ABCD Objectives and Bloom's Taxonomy

ABCD Objectives are a great model for writing objectives that link student expectations, teaching, and grading. The four components include the following:

A- Audience (Who are your learners?)
B- Behavior (What measurable, observable action(s) do you want to see them carry out?)
C- Condition (What do they need in order to achieve the behavior?)
D- What are the standards for acceptable performance i.e., time limit, proportion of correct responses, range of accuracy, or some other qualitative standard?)

Bloom's Taxonomy is an excellent guide for writing ABCD objectives. It helps you scaffold your objectives according to the different levels specified within the cognitive domains and these domains have specific action verbs associated with them that you can use in your behaviors.

Example ABCD Objectives:

Condition- After a lesson introducing and explaining new vocabulary
Audience- students
Behavior- will identify the correct definitions of the words
Degree- with 80% accuracy.

Condition- After successfully completing a vocabulary quiz
Audience- students
Behavior- will collaborate with their peers and write sentences
Degree- using each vocabulary word at least once.

Condition- After a lesson focused on pronunciation of new vocabulary
Audience- students
Behavior- will demonstrate correct pronunciation of the words
Degree- with increased accuracy.
